Strange Rebels

Yesterday we finished Robert Ventresca’s Soldier of Christ and began Christian Caryl’s Strange Rebels:  1979 and the Birth of the Twenty-First Century.  The new book looks at five key events associated with 1979 that mark the resurgence of the importance of religion and markets in the late Twentieth Century.  The five events are the Iranian Revolution; the Jihad against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan; the visit of the new pope, John Paul II, to Poland; the election of Margaret Thatcher; and, the economic reforms in China begun by its new ruler, Deng Xiaoping.  Apparently, Caryl’s challenge is to establish strong links between the five events.
