Divisions of the Pope

In the biography of Pope Pius XII we are currently reading at table there have been very few amusing movements.  Apparently Pius XII did not have the same sense of humor as his successor Pope John XIII.  However, at lunch today we did get an authentic Pius quip,  a delayed retort to Joseph Stalin’s famous question:  How many divisions does the pope have?

“… when the pope read of the new of Stalin’s death in 1953 he grinned and said “Joseph Stalin is dead.  Now he will see how many divisions we have up there!”  [p. 153]
