2005 Table Reading

As we are now reading Simon Winchester‘s latest book, Atlantic, it reminded me that we have read several of his books at table, the last being Outposts, about the remaining British Colonies, e.g. Bermuda, Falkland Islands, Tristan de Cuhna.  We have also read his works, further back, on Krakotoa and the Oxford English Dictionary.

Rereading Winchester made me remember that I had been posting annual lists of all the books we read in a given year, though I have not posted a back list now in several months.  I became Prior in May of 2005 and inherited the Outposts book.  Here is the May to December list for 2005.

Simon Winchester, Outposts:  Journeys to the Surviving Relics of the British Empire

John Allen, Pope Benedict XVI:  A Biography of Joseph Ratzinger

Anthony Howard, Basil Hume:  The Monk Cardinal

David McCullough, 1776

Bruce Feiler, Where God was Born:  A Journey by Land to the Roots of Religion

Even though Pope Benedict had just been elected, and monks generally like John Allen’s books, his biography of Cardinal Ratizinger did not fare well at table.  David McCullough’s book was very popular, and I suspect his most recent book will show up soon.
