February 2011: Father Michael Casey, O.C.S.O, of the Cistercian monastery of Tarrawarra Abbey in Australia visited Saint Anselm’s for a few days. Father Michael has written extensively on monastic life and the Rule of Saint Benedict. He is the author of, amongst other titles, A Guide to Living in the Truth: Saint Benedict’s Teaching on Humility and Strangers to the City: Reflections on the Beliefs and Values of the Rule of Saint Benedict.
While Father Michael’s visit is not directly related to ongoing Table Reading, we have read some of his material both at table and at Daytime Prayer. Fortunately, he did not have to sit through one of his own writings on patience as a monastic virtue at Daytime Prayer.

Brother Isaac, good evening. Clarify for me if you would; Table reading is this the exercise where one member of the monestary reads to the other monks whilest they are having lunch and/or supper? Do you know if the Geisel Library has either of Fr. Michael’s books? How is the reader selected and is it your responsibility as the Prior to select the book for reading? — So much to learn but always very interesting, St. A’s is still teaching me almost fifty years after graduating!

Table Reading is as you describe it, and the Prior assigns the reader with the monks each taking their turn for a week. The Geisel Library has several books by Casey, including at least one of the two I mentioned.
